Vocal Ranges Becoming Wider : 1st May 2011

Singsongs Features / no comments

What do Cee-Lo Green, Matt Bellamy (from Muse) and Bruno Mars have in common. They're all male popstars? Yes. They've all had chart hits in the last year. Yes. What Else? They sing frequently in the countertenor and falsetto ranges.

The incidence of male singers singing higher is increasing rapidly and not just in the pop music world. Higher voices are highly sought in the world of baroque operas - Handel springs to mind, in popular musicals - Matthew Morrison in Glee & Ryan Molloy in Jersey Boys and male sopranos grace Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe.

At the same time, there is a trend in opera for deeper women's voices. Kate Royal, Anna Netrebko & Katherine Jenkins have all lowered their voices to critical acclaim and commercial success.

Maybe it's something in the water.
