Prince - The Artist Known For Controversy : 26th April 2011
Prince, in the middle of his 21-night 'Welcome 2 America' residency in L.A,
has talked of his anger at other artists being able to use his songs.
In an interview with George Lopez, he refers to the "compulsory licensing law"
that allows certain record companies to use his back catalogue in the form of
"cover versions". He doesn't object to live performance covers but feels many
releases of a song dilutes it's impact.
Prince is no stranger to controversy. He had a long running dispute with Warner
Bros. over publishing rights and decided a name change - to the 'Artist Formerly
Known As Prince' - was the answer.
Last year, he proclaimed the internet was no longer an influential medium and suspended
his website, LotusFlow3r.com. His last album, '20ten' was issued as a free CD in Europe.
What next for Prince?
