Music review of the 2000s and predictions for 2010

We're close to the passing of the first decade in the new millenium. What will the Noughties be remembered for, musically?

What can we expect from the Tens? Is pop music dead or is it having a temporary rest?

The 1950s experienced 'the big bang' in pop music terms. Carefully coiffeured crooners gave way to lean and mean rock and
roll stars. Teenagers started to choose their own clothes and language. A social revolution in the 1960s brought music with attitude along with first shoots of youth culture. Pop music went through a cycle of genres through the 1970s and 1980s, revolutionised by the spirit of punk rock in the late seventies.

Another revolution, this time technological has meant people can access many types of music at any time and for free. The availability of the internet in the last two decades has fragmented styles and thrown up quirky mixes of the previous 60 years' music.

Unfortunately, the notion of 'celebrity' has superceded the importance of what the 'celebrity' is famous for or good at but the one constant throughout the years is that everyone appreciates a good song. With nearly 1.7 billion internet users who are now potential music journalists, good music gets quickly recognised and promoted. Then there's the file sharing issue....

Predicting the future is more often than not taking ownership of a poison chalice but a safe assumption is that we'll continue to see people performing, buying and listening to music that is innovative but steeped in the past.
