Marj’s Musical of the Month : 31st March 2009
Marj, our P.A. at Singsongs.com, is mad about musicals and her knowledge of musicals is masterful. We name a song and she'll tell us which musical it's from. She seems to select a musical and sing all the numbers from the show while she's working and then she'll change to another one. That's how we got the idea of asking her to give us "Marj's Musical of the Month".
This month it's her all time favourite "Kiss me Kate" which was a big hit for Cole Porter on Broadway and in 1953 a hugely successful film for MGM studios. This musical, based around Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" was the first ever musical filmed by MGM in 3D and considered perhaps the greatest 3D movie ever made.
It was Cole Porter's first hit musical in nearly a decade and contains such classic numbers as "From this Moment on", "So in love", "Why can't you behave", "Another opening, another show", "Wunderbar" and "It's too darn hot.'
Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson took the romantic leads, but our Marj's favourite is the sizzling performance by that electrifyingly talented dancer Ann Miller of "It's too darn hot", Performing with her in this number is the then dancer Bob Fosse, who went on to win an Oscar as Director of the Award Winning musical "Cabaret" so Marj informs us.
If, like Marj, musicals are your thing, then Singsongs.com has an extensive collection of musical backing tracks for singers. So to sing along or stage you own show, the choice is yours.
