John Barry Tribute : 19th May 2011
Gracing some of the most iconic movies of the last 50 years, John Barry's music is timeless. The use of lush strings, quirky chord progressions and innovative arrangements became his trademark style. He trained as a classical pianist and was an adept trumpet player but it was his love of arranging and composing music that shone through.
He was most famous for scoring countless James Bond films such Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice and Her Majesty's Secret Service but was a five times Oscar winner, behind the music for Zulu, The Lion In Winter and Midnight Cowboy.
In the 1970s he produced a number of TV themes including the music for 'The Persuaders' starring Roger Moore and Tony Curtis and working with celebrated lyricists such as Don Black turned his hand to musicals in the 1980s and 1990s.
He leaves a peerless musical legacy and his memory is being honoured with a memorial concert to be held on 20th June at the Royal Albert Hall. Special musical guests include Shirley Bassey, Rumer & Alfie Boe accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Tributes will be from David Arnold, Don Black, Sir Michael Caine, Timothy Dalton, Sir George Martin, Sir Michael Parkinson and Sir Tim Rice.
